Albert "Rusch Man" Ruschmann (born April 16, 2017) was an American football cornerback for the Colorado Yeti of the International Simulation Football League (ISFL). He played college football for Rutgers University (RU).

Early years

Albert Ruschmann was born on April 16th, 2017 at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey to Maria and Anthony Ruschmann. Anthony worked as a technical salesman for a milling company, while Maria taught special education.

Albert spent almost his entire childhood in Westfield, New Jersey, attending the public school system there. While he was an average student academically, Ruschmann showed an aptitude for music, specifically choral singing. At the conclusion of his freshman year he was approached by his choir director, William Mathews, who was also an assistant coach on the football team. Noticing Ruschmann's height (6-foot, 2-inches), Mathews asked if there would be any chance of convincing him to come out for football in the fall. Hesitant at first, Ruschmann eventually agreed after being told he would have his choice of position on the team due to his size.

The following summer, Ruschmann came out for the team's first summer workout. While the staff liked his height, they felt his lack of both playing experience and muscle made him a better fit for the junior varsity team. In later interviews, Ruschmann explains that he used this as motivation throughout that season to bulk up and make varsity. While Ruschmann started the summer at the linebacker position weighing only 180 lbs, by the end of the season he would weigh-in at 220 lbs. His play on the JV team caught the eye of his coaches, as he excelled in both running down ball-carriers and rushing the passer. At the conclusion of his sophomore season, Ruschmann was officially promoted to the varsity team where he was made one of the team's starting defensive ends.

Ruschmann excelled at his new position on varsity. He capped off his junior year with several accolades including leading the team in sacks with 14.5, an undefeated season, and a division championship. He produced similar results his senior season at Westfield High School, tallying 16 sacks, another undefeated season, and a state championship – Westfield's first in 20 years. It was also during this season that he earned the nickname from teammates and coaching staff of the "Rusch Man" for his exceptional ability to rush the quarterback.

Coming out of high school, Ruschmann had several offers to play football from FCS and Division II schools. A handful of FBS programs showed interest but were concerned with his lack of playtime his first two years of high school. The University of Connecticut was the only FBS school to formally offer him a scholarship. Despite this, Ruschmann elected to enroll at Rutgers University with hopes of making the football team as a walk-on."

College career

In the fall of 2035, Ruschmann attended the first open tryout for the Rutgers University football team. Coach Greg Schiano was already familiar with Ruschmann from recruiting the prior offseason. After impressing the coaching staff, Ruschmann made the team at the defensive end position, but was buried on the depth chart behind more senior members on the team. As a result, Ruschmann requested to be redshirted for the 2035 season; his request was granted. While not seeing the field, he continued to add muscle and practice with the team. It was also during this season that he earned a nickname from teammates, the "Glitter Critter" after Ruschmann shared that his great uncle, Henry Ruschmann, was the inventor of glitter.

After the end of the 2036 school year saw the graduation of both starting defensive ends, Albert Ruschmann earned a spot as a rotational player on the defensive line, subbing in on certain downs or packages. Though his opportunities were limited, he made the most of them tallying up 7 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Ruschmann also made Second Team All-Big Ten at defensive end this season.

Ruschmann's 2037 campaign proved even more fruitful as he was promoted to first on the team depth chart at defensive end. Now playing at 265 pounds, Ruschmann was a force to be reckoned with on the field. The 2037 season saw him tally 12.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, 2 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. As one of the cornerstones of a stout Rutgers defense, Ruschmann helped lead the team to it's first bowl berth in over 6 years. Though the team would lose in the Pinstripe Bowl against Duke 21-17, Ruschmann and the rest of the defensive line held Duke to under 50 yards rushing. At the conclusion of the season, Ruschmann made First Team All-Big Ten at defensive end.

Ruschmann picked up the 2038 season right where he left off. Despite facing four separate opponents ranked in the top 10 at time of playing, Ruschmann wreaked havoc on the field and helped Rutgers to an 8-4 record and another bowl berth. This time Rutgers would find victory over the Tennessee Volunteers 41-20 in the Jeff Bezos Amazon Bowl. Finishing the season with both First Team All-Big Ten and Second Team All-American honors, Ruschmann's final stats were 14.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, 4 passes defended, 1 interception, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries. Ruschmann elected to forego his final year of eligibility and instead declare for the DSFL draft.

Professional career

DSFL

Despite his team's shortcomings, Ruschmann had an impressive Prospect Bowl, leading all rookies in tackles for loss. Ruschmann was selected with the 5th overall pick of the 2039 DSFL Draft by the London Royals.

2039

Albert Ruschmann slotted into the London Royals depth chart as the #2 defensive end behind second-year player Mattress Cadaire. He was joined on the defensive line by fellow rookie Brent Silva, as well as several other key rookies on defense. Additionally, London was fortunate enough to return every single player from the 2038 draft class, only strengthening their roster even more.

Ruschmann's 2039 season started out quietly, only recording 5 tackles and 1 TFL through the first three games. However, week 4 of the Royals 2039 DSFL season featured a matchup against the rival Dallas Birddogs. In a 31-0 statement win, Ruschmann posted 5 tackles, 4 of which for losses, tying a franchise single-game record. Ruschmann followed this up with another standout game just 2 weeks later, this time against the Norfolk Seawolves, where he posted 3 tackles, all of which were for losses. This victory also handed Norfolk it's first loss of the season.

Despite the team's success and stout defense, the Royals were sporting a 4-5 record heading into week 10. Itching to get back to the playoffs again, Ruschmann would go on to help the team win 4 of their last 5 games. During this stretch, he recorded 12 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. Most importantly, though, the Royals secured a playoff berth as the #1 seed in their conference.

The Royals first playoff game was against the Portland Pythons at home. While Ruschmann only recorded 2 tackles in this game (1 for a loss), the rest of the defense played exceedingly well. They conceded only a field goal to Portland while recording 3 sacks and a turnover. Following this victory, the London Royals were playing for the Ultimini title, their second appearance in the championship game in only four years as a franchise. While Ruschmann's stats were again modest, - 3 tackles, 1 for a loss - he made them count. His lone tackle for loss came late in the fourth quarter on a 4th and 7 play where Norfolk quarterback Suleiman Ramza attempted to run a QB sweep to convert for the first down. Ruschmann tackled him for a 7 yard loss and turned the ball over on downs, thus sealing London's Ultimini victory.

2049

The 2049 season, while certainly the worst one for the Colorado Yeti since Ruschmann joined the team, was still a very solid one for him as a player. His 10th season in the ISFL, 11th total, Ruschmann still sat as CB1 on the Colorado depth chart. Despite only winning two games, both against the Baltimore Hawks, Ruschmann managed to tally 27 passes defended on the season, including 4 interceptions. Additionally, he managed to force 4 fumbles, recovering 2 of them. Ruschmann had his best games away against the Baltimore Hawks week 2, and away against the New York Silverbacks week 10. In those two games combined, he totaled 13 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 5 passes defended. Despite a poor team performance, Ruschmann was hoping to be recognized individually by the award voters at the end of the season. However, Ruschmann was left off of the Cornerback of the Year ballot entirely. Instead, a non-eligible player was on the ballot and subsequently won the award. Despite being in the twilight of his career, Ruschmann vowed to use this as motivation and have an even better season in 2050.

2050

Still in a rebuild from the previous season, the Colorado Yeti went 3-13 with Ruschmann still holding down the CB1 position on the defense. With Ruschmann being advanced in his years, a noticeable decline in his stats was observed. In his 12th total season, Ruschmann notched 2 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles on the season. Additionally, his 19 passes defended this year moved him into second all time in career passes defended. While it would be miraculous for Ruschmann to surpass Rich Triplet who is first on this list, it still marked a career achievement for him. Some highlights on the season for Ruschmann included the Yeti's 31-21 victory over the Philadelphia Liberty where he had 1 tackle, 3 passes defended, and 1 interception, as well as Colorado's 27-20 victory at home over the Yellowknife Wraiths where he notched 9 tackles and 4 passes defended. Although his statline was paltry in comparison to past seasons, Ruschmann was happy to still be on the field helping the Yeti.

2051

The 2051 season was an improvement over the previous season for the Colorado Yeti, at least in the win column. Going 5-11, Colorado secured wins over the New York Silverbacks, and two wins each over both the Philadelphia Liberty and the Berlin Fire Salamanders, including a 65-24 blowout in Week 14. Albert Ruschmann himself, still playing at the CB1 spot on the defense, added another 21 passes defended on the season bringing his career total to 276. Ruschmann also notched 2 turnovers this seasons, 1 forced fumble and 1 interception. Ruschmann's best performance of the season came in a blowout loss to the Sarasota Sailfish where he tallied 5 passes defended as well as a team-leading 7 tackles. While this was Ruschmann's last season playing the CB1 position for the Yeti, he took the opportunity to teach the younger guys beneath him on the depth chart what it takes to be great.
