Johnson was a force the minute he bagan starting as a true freshman. Being a defensive playmakers, he became a force nearly being able to lock up a whole side of the field whenever he was patrolling there. He finished 2nd on the all time tackles list, something that could have easily been achieved had he stayed that one more season. Johnson led FSU in tackles as a redshirt freshman, compiling 86, 14 for loss, five sacks, and two forced fumbles. He posted 70 stops the following year, 13 1⁄2 of those for loss, with five sacks and two interceptions to earn a first-team all-conference selection as a redshirt sophomore. After the season, Tre was named the MEAC defensive player of the year, making Florida State the first school to win the award four years in a row. Johnson finished the season with 124 tackles, 14 1⁄2 tackles for loss, 3 1⁄2 sacks, two interceptions, three pass break-ups, and four forced fumbles. He had an impressive game against ACC powerhouse Clemson, totaling 19 tackles. Tre saved his best for last, as he posted career highs in total tackles (113) and sacks (81⁄2) as a senior while picking off two more passes and forcing one fumble. His 73 solo tackles put him in the Top 10 in the nation, and 4 1⁄2 of his sacks came in his final two games. He also won the MEAC defensive player of the year award again in his final season.

The Season 33 season was Johnson’s last season under contract with the Baltimore Hawks.  they had yet to have a winning season throughout Johnson's playing career and they knew it would be a tough Make It or Break It time. Throughout the season Johnson head flashes of his earlier years of being a star safety while the tackle numbers were down other numbers like Sachs safeties deflections were at all-time highs.  Baltimore's defense was finally doing what they needed to do in the offense is coming together. The team ended up posting the second best offense and defense in the league and we're finally able to break that winning record drought.  through a combined effort the team along with Johnson was able to pull off many upsets in finally get to the playoffs for the first time in Johnson's career and would go on to win the Ultimus. Even with the new championship which was one of the dreams for the team and Johnson since starting there was still a little bit of indecisiveness  regarding Johnson's future with the team and for the first time he was  no longer under contract and tested free agency.
