Franklin Armstrong (born March 12, 2008) is a former American football quarterback for the Orange County Otters of the International Simulation Football League. He played college football for University of Winnipeg and in the Developmental Simulation Football League for the Portland Pythons.

Early years

Franklin Armstrong was born in Miami, Manitoba. He grew up in Miami, born to parents Ruben and Jackie Armstrong. He was the oldest of seven siblings. His father was veteran of the Iraq wars and passed away when Armstrong was eight years old. His mother, Jackie, was a school teacher, and Warren learned to cook, sew, iron and housekeep to help take care of the family. He attended Kelvin High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba for the purpose of athletics where he lettered in both football and baseball. Armstrong saw himself as a two sport athlete from an early age, but there was always that nagging feeling he would end up having to choose one over the other. He decided after his junior year that he could play only one sport for the rest of his high school career because he had to work the rest of the year to help the family. He chose to play football as a quarterback since he found that he could throw a football longer, harder, and straighter than anyone he knew. In his junior year of highschool, he fully committed to football and the position of QB. He had little playing time until his junior year, when he took over as varsity starting quarterback. In his senior season in 2025, they reached the city playoffs, and Armstrong was named to the all-city team.

College career

Franklin Armstrong made the shocking choice to join the newly formed Winnipeg Wesmen football program instead of the much larger, and fully established football program with the University of Manitoba Bisons. His decision shocked many, as the youngster had cited that the smaller and fledging program at the University of Winnipeg was where he intended to make a name for himself in the CIS. And make a name for himself he did. As a true freshmen he led a the Wesmen to an undefeated 8-0 regular season. The Wesmen upset their fast rivals the University of Manitoba Bisons, en route to an eventual 28-24 Vanier Cup win against the favoured Western Ontario Mustangs in 2026. Down 24-14 at the start of the 4th, Armstrong led two consecutive touchdown drives to take the lead as the Wesmen held on for the win. He was rewarded the Ted Morris Memorial trophy as the game's outstanding player. Adding to his accolades, he was named 1st-team Quarterback for the 2026 CIS All-Candadian team at the end of the season. He also earned the prestigious Hec Crighton Trophy honouring the top football player across the country. An injury riddled 2027 CIS season for Armstrong saw the Wesmen plummet from a 5-0 start to 5-3 and a Hardy Trophy loss to the Calgary Dinos. This marked the end for Armstrong's Wesmen career.

DSFL career

Deciding to leave school early, he was a waiver wire pickup by the Portland Pythons. He was released at the end of the S13 regular season without getting an opportunity for playing time.

Season 14 Prospect Bowl

Armstrong was assigned to the East Cobras prospect team in the lead up to the Season 14 Prospect Bowl. Under the helm of a struggling Armstrong, the Cobras went 2-3 over 5 games and missed out on the Prospect Bowl Playoffs. Armstrong finished with a 48 passer rating, throwing 3 TDs to 5 interceptions, 684 yards and a completion percentage of just 41.9%.

Season 14 DSFL Draft

Cited by many as the leader of the S14 DSFL QB class, Armstrong ended up falling to the 63rd overall pick in the 11th round to the Portland Pythons. The same draft saw Prospect Bowl Rivals Apollo Lange and Ryan Leaf Jr. both go in the 3rd round, and Jay Longshaw go in the 5th.

Season 14 DSFL Season

Not many people would have predicted that a quarterback picked in the 11th round would have had the kind of season Armstrong did in S14. The numbers were spectacular as Armstrong had 2,614 passing yards (2nd) on 239 completions (2nd), 22 touchdowns (1st) to only 11 interceptions, and a passer rating of 86 (1st) which was the best in the DSFL, beating out players like Cooter Bigsby and Corvo Havran who were the 1st and 2nd overall draft picks in the ISFL S14 draft. In the playoffs, he led his team to an NFC championship win over the Norfolk Seawolves, with a score of 16-13. The Ultimini title featured the Portland Pythons at home against the defending champions Tijuana Luchadores. Overcoming three interceptions, Armstrong threw three touchdown passes in the 2nd half along with two in the 4th quarter to seal the Season 14 Ultimini Title for the Portland Pythons. Armstrong was awarded the DSFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, DSFL Offensive Player of the Year, DSFL Quarterback of the Year Award and the DSFL Most Valuable Player Award at the conclusion of the season.

Franklin Armstrong was considered the clear frontrunner of the S15 DSFL QB prospects. Over 90% of ISFL mock drafts had Armstrong going in the first round. Armstrong yet again faced a draft day drop as he fell to the 3rd round where he was picked up by the Orange County Otters at 28th overall.

Season 15 DSFL Season

Armstrong's second full season in the DSFL was a frustrating one as the defending champions Portland Pythons struggled all season. While Armstrong's numbers were solid at a 14 and 9 touchdown to interception ratio and a 77.1 rating, the numbers did not translate to a lot of wins. Due to a mixture of losing a plethora of the previous season's championship team to the ISFL, and a little bad luck on the road, the Pythons found themselves at 7-7 by the end of the season. This was good enough for homefield in the NFC as they had the tiebreaker over the Kansas City Coyotes whose record was also 7-7. After dominating the NFC championship 31-7 against the Coyotes, the Pythons found themselves in the Ultimini for their second straight appearance. They matched up against the Palm Beach Solar Bears, who had bested them in both prior matchups in Season 15. The Ultimini was a sad affair for the Pythons as they lost by a commanding score of 37-17. Armstrong had one of the worst games of his career, throwing 12/30, a pedestrian 95 yards, and an interception which gave him an overall rating of 34.7.

Season 16 DSFL Season

Season 16 marked the last season for Armstrong in the DSFL. Armstrong had bump in production as he did enough to regain the MVP and QBotY awards he last won two season ago. He threw 2805 yards, 18 TDs, 14 INTs and an overall rating of 82.1. He led the league in passing touchdowns, passing yards and passer rating. The Pythons led the NFC with a dominating 11-3 season as the Luchadores were the regular season champs of the SFC. Through weeks 11 and 12 Armstrong threw for 8 touchdowns and 0 interceptions which was a highlight series of games for the quarterback. Armstrong was awarded the DSFL Quarterback of the Year and the DSFL Most Valuable Player Award for another fantastic season. The Pythons rolled into the Ultimini again after a close victory against the Coyotes in the NFC conference championship game where they matched up in a rematch of the S14 DSFL Ultimini game facing the 12 win Luchadores. Unfortunately it was the Luchadores who won this go around as Armstrong threw 2 backbreaking interceptions in a 28-14 loss. A devastating end to Armstrong's Pythons career.

ISFL career

After three full seasons in the DSFL, Armstrong was finally called up to replace Showbiz at the end of the S16 ISFL season.

Season 17 ISFL Season

Franklin Armstrong’s S17 rookie season in the ISFL was a fairly successful one. He led the team to a 7-6 record and second in the ASFC to the defending champions Arizona Outlaws. He threw for 3191 yards, and a TD/INT ratio of 23/13. His efficiency was low with a 53.5 completion percentage (last in the league) and a passer rating of 78.2 (second last).

The wildcard game featured a rematch of Armstrong’s first ISFL game in Week 1 against the Joliet Christ led San Jose Sabercats. The Otters avenged their Week 1 loss in a close home victory, winning 20-13. This marked the last game in Christ's career. The conference championship in the ASFC featured the defending champions Outlaws vs the underdog Orange County Otters. This time Arizona was the home team who played below expectations and suffered a devastating loss, as the Otters went on to the Ultimus on a 37-20 dominating road win.

Armstrong had 4 total touchdowns in Ultimus Bowl XVII

The Ultimus featured a matchup between the visiting Orange County Otters and the home team Baltimore Hawks. The game was back and forth as it was 7-7 at one point and eventually 14-14. The Otters were nursing a 21-17 lead early in the 4th before Armstrong gave them a two score lead midway through the 4th Quarter with a TD pass to Johnny Blaze. The defence held their own for the rest of the 4th quarter as the Otters went on to win 28-17 for their seventh Ultimus championship.

Armstrong had a final stat line of 17/27, 287 yards, and 3 TD passes with 135.9 passer rating. He also was the game’s leading rusher with 11 carries, 48 rushing yards and another TD on the ground. He was named Ultimus Bowl Offensive Player of the Game as well as ISFL Playoffs Most Valuable Player for his dominant introduction to the playoffs.

Season 18 ISFL Season

The Orange County Otters continued their consecutive playoff appearances streak that dated back to 2016 (S1). The Otters headed into the season as the defending champions, winners of Ultimus Bowl XVII. The Otters improved their record from the previous year, going from 7-6 to 10-3. They were first place in the ASFC season and earned home field advantage in the Conference, but were not able to ensure home field in the Ultimus as they fell short of the Wraiths league leading 11-2 record. Franklin Armstrong had a very strong second season as he led a very potent offence headlined by players like Johnny Blaze who took home his second positional award at tight end. Armstrong had a TD/INT ratio of 18/9, and passed for 2868 yards. While the volume was low, Armstrong's efficiency was much improved. He had a 59.1 completion percentage (3rd), and 88.6 passer rating which was more than 10 points higher than his previous season. Armstrong's rushing abilities is where he made headlines, rushing for 754 yards and 9 rushing touchdowns. He was the Otters leading rusher as well as finishing top 10 in rushing overall league wide.

The Otters beat Second Line in the Quarterfinals and had their third straight matchup with the Arizona Outlaws in the Championship for the ASFC. They prevailed for the second straight year, with a hard fought 21-16 home victory to reach their second straight Ultimus Bowl. It was an odd game as the Outlaws had 20 first downs to the Otters 10, 442 yards compared to the Otters 265, and Armstrong had only 11 completions in the game. Despite this, the Otters defence managed to hold strong in the redzone, limiting the Outlaws to one touchdown on the day. In the Ultimus, the matched up with the number one team in the league, the 11-2 Yellowknife Wraiths. The Otters won a defensive slug fest in a 16-10 victory. Armstrong was named Ultimus Bowl Offensive Player of the Game for the second straight season, for his efficient 16/26, 226 yards and 1 touchdown performance. The Otters only touchdown came early in the 1st quarter, as Franklin Armstrong led the team down the field for an opening touchdown drive with Blaze on the receiving end of the 31 yard pass. He was also awarded the Playoff Most Valuable player for the season season in a row.

Season 19 ISFL Season

Franklin Armstrong's third season in the league started off in dominant fashion. Armstrong led the Otters to a 7-0 start while having 17 TD passes and 3 interceptions during that period as well as having a passer rating north of 100. Sadly, after a week 8 loss to the New Orleans Second Line which ended the Otters hopes of an undefeated season, their season sputtered almost to a halt. They won 2 games over their last 6 and Armstrong's Quarterback of the Year and Most Valuable Players hopes were seemingly in danger. Their regular season ended with a 44-14 drubbing to the Colorado Yeti which led to them tying the Yellowknife Wraiths with a 9-4 record on the season. Due to tiebreakers the Otters lost homefield advantage in the Ultimus Bowl if they would meet the Wraiths in the big game.

Despite the late season struggles, Armstrong continued his upward trajectory posting career bests in passing yards (3321), touchdown passes (24) and passer rating (93.2). His rushing numbers took a dip from season 18, but were still very good, with 601 yards on the ground with 3 rushing touchdowns on 114 attempts.

The Otters went into the playoffs reeling from the late season struggles but they managed to regroup under the leadership of now playoff vet Armstrong. Their playoff run started with yet another playoff matchup with the Arizona Outlaws in which they quickly took hold of the game and prevailed for another appearance in the ASFC. This time they matched up with the Second Line, hoping to get revenge for the hurtful week 8 loss. The Otters quickly jumped to a fast 14-3 lead and managed to hold on for the victory and a chance to win 3 straight Ultimus Trophies for the second time in franchise history. They would have to do it on the road as the Wraiths made their way to the final stage yet again, as a rematch was set for last season's Ultimus Bowl XVIII. A rematch for the ages. The Otters managed to win this rematch in a back and forth thriller. Armstrong finally cemented the win after getting the ball with 4 minutes to play and down by 4. He drove the Otters down all the way for a 30-27 lead in only 2 minutes and the Otters defence managed to hold on to confirm the three peat.

Armstrong was named ISFL Playoffs Most Valuable Player and the Ultimus Bowl Offensive Player of the Game for the 3rd straight season. He also won his first ISFL Quarterback of the Year honour (tying with Corvo Havran for the award) and ISFL Most Valuable Player Award as well as being voted to the Season 19 ISFL Pro Bowl roster for his 1st Pro Bowl appearance. roster. Despite the accolades and yet another Ultimus Championship, Armstrong considered this a difficult but rewarding season. It certainly didn't come easy.

Season 20 ISFL Season

Season 20 was an up and down season for Franklin Armstrong and the Orange County Otters. They started off the season 2-3 but managed to rally off 5 straight wins to make the race for the ASFC a very tight one with the Austin Copperheads. Their hopes for the conference were dashed after a devastating Week 11 loss against the Austin Copperheads. They were up 27-7 against the Copperheads before being outscored 28-0 in the 4th quarter. This essentially gave the Copperheads the Conference and rights to homefield in the ASFC. The Otters continued to stumble down the stretch as they lost their remaining two games. This led to the Otters finishing with a 7-6 record, falling behind the New Orleans Second Line for 3rd in the conference. They had to go on the road against Second Line in the wild card game, which led to their 4th straight loss. This broke the Otters streak of Ultimus wins at 3 straight to finish off a disappointing season.

Statistically, Franklin Armstrong passed for 2920 yards, 17 touchdown passes and 7 interceptions with 54.6 completion perception and a 86.1 passer rating, showing a slight dip in both volume and efficiency from his previous MVP season. The story of Armstrong’s season revolved around his run at becoming the first quarterback in ISFL history to achieve 1000 rushing yards in the season. Armstrong began to make headlines after a Week 4 game against the Colorado Yeti where he rushed for a league record of 221 yards and 3 touchdowns on only 10 attempts. He continued his dominance on the ground the rest of the way, finishing 5th in the league in rushing yards at 1001 yards with 6.9 yards/attempt. He was also tied for 4th in rushing touchdowns with 8.

Armstrong was voted to the Season 20 ISFL Pro Bowl roster for his 2nd straight Pro Bowl appearance. He was also awarded his 2nd straight ISFL Most Valuable Player Award and took home the ISFL Performance of the Year Award for his performance in Week 9. He was 23/37, with 308 yards and 4 TD passes, with a 124.6 passer rating through the air, and had 82 yards and 1 TD on the ground against the Arizona Outlaws. A truly dominant performance.

Season 21 ISFL Season

Armstrong had his best statistical passing season yet in Season 21. He broke Childish Gambino’s record for passer rating in a season with a mark of 109.3. He also posted career highs in completion percentage (63.5), touchdown passes (26) and a career low in interceptions (2). He ran quite a bit less in Season 21 as Orange County Otters’s game plan favored the pass, but still finished with 423 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. The Otters led the ASFC with a 10-3 record, as they wrested away the conference from the New Orleans Second Line who started off 9-0. They were also the number 1 overall seed for the entire playoffs and would be guaranteed home field advantage throughout the playoffs. They would end having a rematch with the Second Line who they split two games with in the regular season. The Otters were down 17-3 going into halftime but Armstrong led them all the way back to tie the game at 24-24 with 1:09 to go in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately the Otters couldn’t manage to hold off the resilient Second Line who won 27-24 in overtime to earn an Ultimus berth.

Armstrong had a record breaking 109.3 passer rating in Season 21

Despite the heartbreaking end to the season, Armstrong was awarded even more honors at the conclusion of the season. Armstrong was voted to the Season 21 ISFL Pro Bowl roster for his 3rd straight Pro Bowl appearance. He was also awarded his 3nd straight ISFL Most Valuable Player Award and took home his 2nd ISFL Quarterback of the Year award.

His 3rd MVP award tied him with former Otter great Mike Boss for the most all time. As one of Boss’s MVP designations were shared with another player, Armstrong has technically had the most solo MVP designations for any player in ISFL history.

Season 22 ISFL Season

Armstrong’s 6th ISFL season was a return to the norm. After his record breaking S21 season, he had a very similar statistical output in the passing game to his S20 season. He threw for 2922 yards, 17 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. His overall passer rating was 86.7. The 8 interceptions quadrupled his total from S21. On the ground, he actually improved his output from the previous year with 720 yards on 6.8 yards per attempt and 6 touchdowns. The Orange County Otters went 10-3 for the second consecutive year. They lost two of their games to the resurgent San Jose Sabercats. Their other loss came to the Austin Copperheads in Week 11 where they lost 28-20 at home on a late Easton Cole touchdown run. Unfortunately, the late season losses saw the Otters tumble from their #1 seed spot in the playoffs as the Wraiths finished 11-2. In the playoffs they matched up with the Austin Copperheads. Armstrong proceeded to have one of his best playoff games ever, going 12/19, 261 yards and 4 touchdown passes to 1 interception. He also had 33 yards on the ground. The Otters put up 50 points against the Copperheads, their highest offensive output all season. In the NSFC playoff picture, the Colorado Yeti went on a bit of a run, upsetting the Wraiths in the NSFC Conference Championship game. This would mean the Otters would be the home team in the Ultimus Bowl. The Ultimus started off great for the Otters as they went up 21-3 in the game. Unfortunately, things took a tragic turn as the Yeti rallied off 22 points and took the lead with 38 seconds left to go in the game. The Otters would lose to a devastating score of 25-24 to end their season. Armstrong was named Ultimus Bowl Offensive Player of the Game for his efficient, but slightly pedestrian, 18/26, 220 yards and 1 TD performance. That would make him the recipient of the most Ultimus Bowl Offensive Player of the Game designations in league history, passing Mike Boss and Borkus Maximus III. Armstrong’s run on MVP titles ended, as Cooter Bigsby took home the award for the 2nd time. Armstrong was named to the Season 22 ISFL Pro Bowl squad for the 4th season in a row.

Season 23 ISFL Season

Season 23 marked the beginning of the 16 game season era for the ISFL. Armstrong started off hot as he began the year with a 15-1 TD/INT ratio over the first 6 games. The Otters were 5-1 over that stretch. Armstrong slowed down the rest of the season throwing 9 TD passes and 7 interceptions over the last 10 games. Despite this, Armstrong finished 2nd in TD passes with 24, 8 interceptions and 3492 yards. He led the league in passer rating at 88.2 as well as leading in TD% and INT%. Armstrong led the Otters to yet another 1st seed in the playoffs, with a league best 11-5 record. The Otters had a heartbreak in the ASFC conference championship game where they lost 31-22 to the .500 Austin Copperheads. It was yet another disappointing end to the season. The Otters had now lost 3 out of their last 4 playoff games, going one and done in three out of four seasons. It was a far cry from Armstrong’s magical start to his career where he won 7 straight playoff games and three straight championships. After the season, Armstrong was named to the Season 23 ISFL Pro Bowl squad for the 5th season in a row. He also lost out on the Quarterback of the Year award to Jay Cue despite leading him in most efficiency categories and most importantly, passer rating. The ISFL Most Valuable Player Award went to Mathias Hanyadi and Armstrong finished 3rd in the voting. Overall, while it was efficient season for Armstrong, there wasn’t much to show for his efforts at the conclusion of the season. The Otters signed Suleiman Ramza, the free agent quarterback formerly of the Philadelphia Liberty to take over for Armstrong after Season 24. Season 24 will officially mark the end of the legendary career of Franklin Armstrong.

Season 24 ISFL Season

Entering the season, Franklin Armstrong hadn't yet announced his plan post Ultimus 24. Some media outlets speculated that Armstrong would try to land the starting spot on another squad as the Otters clearly planned to move on from Armstrong post S24. They had just signed reigning DSFL MVP Suleiman Ramza and he was primed to be the starting QB on the 25th anniversary season of the ISFL.

With questions looming about Armstrong's future, the Otters struggled mightily out of the gate losing three straight games to start the season. The Otters had never missed the playoffs in their history, and Armstrong didn't plan to break the playoff streak. The Otters had to claw their way back from being the lowest ranked team in the ISFL, a position they hadn't really seen themselves in during the Armstrong era. They won 4 out of their next 5 games to put them at .500 at the halfway point of the season. They then won the next 5 out of 6 to put them all the way back at the top of the ASFC. The rest of the ASFC was at a deadlock all the way up until the end of the season. The final rankings had four 9-7 teams, and the Otters sadly lost out on tiebreaks to the San Jose Sabercats for the number 1 seed in the ASFC.

In the wildcard round of the playoffs, Armstrong led the Otters to a 31-21 home victory against the New Orleans Second Line. Armstrong broke the record for all time playoff TDs (22 passing, 5 rushing) surpassing his predecessor Mike Boss with 25 (24 passing, 1 rushing). Armstrong and the Otters then had to play on the road against the Sabercats where they lost a disappointing 3-17. A crushing end to a fantastic career for the future Hall of Famer.

This would be Armstrong's final game and he announced his retirement from football in his postgame media conference. Armstrong was named to the Season 24 ISFL Pro Bowl squad for his 6th straight pro bowl appearance. His very last honour in an illustrious career.
