Eugene Smoothie (born January 1, 2001) is an American football tight end for the Prospect of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL).

Early years

Eugene was born in small town of Canmore, Alberta on January 1, 2001 to a Vietnamese immigrant family. His father, Thanh Truoc and mother, Vinh Vuong had been together in Ho Chi Minh city before separately immigrating to Canada and meeting up again. Eugene is the youngest of three siblings that were all born in Canada. He spent most of his time living in the outskirts in rural Alberta, only picking up American Football as a hobby when his family moved to Calgary. Originally he had only spend time playing competitive hockey from age 8 to 15. After becoming part of the high school team at Bishop Caroll High School, Eugene opted against enrolling in the junior hockey draft and chose to continue as part of the local football community team in further finding more time and enjoyment in the new sport. He was then invited to attend the DSFL Draft Combine as part of a friend's recommendation to scouting groups in the DSFL organization

College career

"Smoothie chose to attend the University of California, Los Angeles where he majored in Psychology and spent time trying to find his place on the UCLA Bruins Football team. As a true freshman in 2019, Eugene rarely found himself regular playing time, often spending more time on the bench rather than on the field. He entered UCLA after moving to the States and living with relatives. Finding little opportunity to demonstrate his talents with the Bruins organization, he decided to forgo his eligibility early to declare for the DSFL draft. Due to the lack of his playing time and history with football, there is very little scouting report on the amount of play time beyond a few glimpses. From what he had demonstrated, it didn't appear as if Smoothie was out of place regardless of the scheme or play and showed his flexibility in being able to manage minimal expectations."

DSFL: Myrtle Beach Buccaneers

Approaching the S22 DSFL Draft, Eugene Smoothie found himself with limited contact and interest from majority of the DSFL teams. Knowing that between the massive Tight End class the season before as well as the intense competition for the position despite limited spots, Smoothie would have to face the reality of sitting on the bottom of a team's depth chart. That would have been the case were it not for the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers seeing the defensive latent talent in Smoothie, looking to take advantage of his speed and strength to be converted to the Safety position. The Buccaneers selected Smoothie at the end of the 4th round at 32nd overall and began transitioning him to the defensive back role.

In spite of the rushed transition and developing the skill set necessary for the opposite side of the field, Smoothie took to the Strong Safety position quickly, solidifying himself as a regular starter after receiving Defensive Player of the Game in Week 1 against the Portland Pythons. He recorded 5 tackles, 2 sacks 1 PD and 1 INT in his debut game. The rest of the season was relatively quiet in comparison ending with 71 tackles (3rd on the team), 1 TFL (T-4th on team), 7 sacks (2nd on team), 2 INT (T-1st on team) and 3 Pass Deflections (5th on team) as the starting Strong Safety in every game for the Buccaneers. Smoothie regularly found himself participating more in the latter half of games attributing his success to his fitness as one of his strengths compared to his peers.

Unfortunately with the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers losing their final must win game against the Norfolk Seawolves for the final playoff spot, Smoothie found himself missing out on the playoffs in his rookie season.
