Dawkins was born in Long Island, his father Bruce Dawkins was a professional boxer. Deuce carried a lot of pressure growing up to be as successful as his father. His father would often try to get him involved in wrestling academies to follow in his footsteps. Yet, Deuce did not have the passion for wrestling or boxing. As he grew older, Deuce towered over all his peers, he was talked into playing football for the Garden City Trojans. Deuce was able to hone his skills as a naturally gifted athlete, and at this point only a freshman. Deuce was able to help the Garden City Trojans win the Long Island Division II finals three out of his four seasons with the team. He would shatter his schools receiving record and gain numerous honors, becoming a highly touted prospect. Although colleges were concerned about his history of injuries, as he missed his whole junior year with a major MCL tear. He was ranked as the #7 TE in the nation as a 4 star recruit.

In his freshman year, Deuce would go on to miss 10 games in an injury riddled season, as his injury bug carried with him through his freshman year. He suffered a concussion in his debut, and battled with an mcl sprain throughout the season. Deuce would play the final two games, racking up 6 catches for 90 yards and 1 TD. In his sophomore year, Deuce would play 11 games garnering 35 catches for 459 yards and 3 TDS. Dawkins would go on to receive 2nd team All-ACC honors. In his junior year Dawkins would become the focal point of the Cavaliers offense, popping on the scene. Dawkins would amass 65 catches for 881 yards and 9 TDS, earning 1st team all ACC and a close 2nd on the Mackey Award voting. Deuce would forgo his senior season, and enter the DSFL.
