Daniel Winkler (born November 30, 2013) is an American football defensive end for the Tijuana Luchadores of the Developmental Simulation Football League (DSFL). He played college football for Southwestern University and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Winkler was born and raised in Pflugerville, Texas, just outside the state's capitol and the site of classic football television program Friday Night Lights. From an early age he was indoctrinated into the University of Texas fandom, and had dreams of attending UT himself to take the field wearing the burnt orange and white. As soon as he was able, he began playing flag football and wreaking havoc with his plus speed and size for his age. When he entered high school, inspired by the Central Texas football culture, Winkler wasted no time in hitting the turf of Kuempel Field for the Pflugerville High School Panthers. He terrorized opposing QBs with a killer first step on the outside edge and a hard right hand jab. Aided by his defensive leadership, the Panthers made it to the playoffs each year of his high school career. His junior year they made it to the state championship, unfortunately losing to Katy High School.

College career

Not heavily recruited by D1 programs, WInkler turned to somewhere he felt more appreciated in nearby Southwestern University. He carried on with his explosive punishment against D3 quarterbacks, racking up 15 sacks his freshman year, including 4 in a game against Colorado College. Unfortunately for him, SU is hardly known as an athletics school - instead focusing on STEM programs. Winkler majored in Communication Studies and enjoyed being a member of the Southwestern Singers ensemble under the direction of Kenny Sheppard - one of the reasons he chose SU is the flexibility he had as a student athlete. Although he did care about his studies, Winkler's football duties soon became his primary focus as his abilities started to grow. It was not until his senior year that the Pirates were able to supplement his talents with other recruits and finally win the SCAC conference over perennial powerhouse Mary Hardin Baylor. Winkler had the best season of his career, accumulating 23 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown.
