Alexander Ryan (born November 29, 1988) is an American football wide receiver who is currently unsigned by a professional team. He played college football for University of Iowa (Iowa) and has declared his intent to enter the professional ranks next season.

Early years

Alexander Ryan was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on November 29, 2008. He is the son of former minor league shortstop Gerald Ryan. Gerald was drafted by the Chicago Cubs but never made it out of AAA. Once his career stalled with the Iowa Cubs, he retired but remained in Des Moines, Iowa. He met Alexander's mother, Karen, who worked at the time as a journalist for the Des Moines Register. Gerald and Karen married and had three children: Alexander, Mitchell, and Kara.

Alexander was the star athlete at Roosevelt High School, starting varsity for the football and basketball teams when he was a freshman. Ryan holds single game and Roosevelt career records for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.

College career

Despite a decorated high school career, Ryan did not receive scholarship offers from Division 1 programs. Ryan walked on to the University of Iowa football program, where he quickly began turning heads of coaches and teammates. He saw limited action as a true freshman and sophomore, but he broke out as a reliable option as a junior, posting 50 receptions for 623 yards and 4 touchdowns on the season. As a senior, Ryan was called on often as the go-to receiver for the Hawkeyes, as he posted 73 receptions for 849 yards and 7 touchdowns. Ryan finished his Hawkeye career with 140 receptions, 1702 yards, and 12 touchdowns. His 140 receptions is good for 8th all-time among Iowa Hawkeyes.
