Early years
Thurman was born in Brisbane, Australia to his mother, Cecilia Waters, and his father, Ronald J. Waters. Initially when growing up, Thurman played his native sport of Australian Rules Football (Aussie Rules), excelling at that from a young age due to his larger frame and more aggressive tackling when compared to other kids. However, an injury to his shoulder would prevent him from receiving any college offers in to go play his first sport of choice in Australia, as such, Thurman began to search for a sport to replace his love for Aussie Rules, eventually settling on American Football, training with local youth team the Brisbane Ravens. Through this experience over the Summer, and his decision to move to an England based University in order to receive a higher standard of education, Thurman decided he wanted to continue playing football at a college level. He excelled in his first season at youth, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year for his club.
College career
Coming into the sport for only his second season, the shift to playing in the UK was an easy one for Thurman to overcome, with the level of competition being nowhere near as high as it is in America or even Australia, as a result, Thurman showed out in his first season playing, averaging 5 TFLs and 3 sacks per game across the season, with his standout game coming against the weakest team in the division, with Thurman registering 7 sacks, 11 TFLs, and 3 forced fumbles, returning one to the house for a touchdown. Despite his dominance in the UK, many questions were raised about making the transition to the US level of the game, however Thurman has come overseas with rigour, routinely performing in training, and most recently dominating in his first game in the US, winning Defensive Player of the Game, and securing a safety for the Baja Barracudas in their first Rookie Bowl game.
