Early years
Sigismund was born in Cygnet, OH, 1947 to two German immigrants, Margaret and Heinrich Sternenstaub, both refugees from East Germany, arriving shortly after the end of World War II. His upbringing was one of deprivation, as Heinrich was a struggling concert floutist, and Margaret was sickly. Sigismund worked on a local dairy farm, before and after school, to supplement Heinrich's meager salary. He attended Bromley Technical High School, where he was introduced to American Football and quickly became a standout player, being recongized as All-State for Ohio in both his Junior and Senior years. Since his family could not afford to pay for equipment or a gym membership, much of his training was done using implements and hay bales, on the farm Sigismund worked at.
College career
Sigismund's two-time All-State recognition caught the attention of recruiters and he was offered a full football scholarship to Duke University. Sigismund played as a rotational defensive lineman, subbing at Defensive End and Defensive Tackle, as a true Freshman. He broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore, starting every game at Defensive Tackle, recieving All-ACC recognition for his high level of play. His Junior season, Sigismund was named captain and led the defense as they allowed an ACC-best 12 points per game and won the conference championship, as well as the Rose Bowl. He was recognized as Second Team All-American. He forgoed his Senior year to declare for the DSFL draft.
