College playing career
Martinez was recruited by Death Valley State to play baseball, but at the start of the football program by S.J. Ticklebottom, Martinez decided to be part of the many walk-ons to join the football team. He originally played as the starting quarterback but would, later on, switch to running back and fullback as well as a little bit of linebacker in his freshman and sophomore seasons.
