Early years
Sam was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and grew up playing rugby. As a child Sam played a lot of different sports from soccer to volleyball but eventually settled on rugby while he was growing up.
In rugby he played flanker up until his Junior year of high school when he switched his focus to defensive end. Throughout high school he was his team captain and helped lead his team to a state championship. During High School Sam also played a few games on the offensive line when a teammate went down with injury. He wasn't great but he held is own. He definitely showed out better as a defensive end.
During his short high school career he lead his team in sacks in both his Junior and Senior year with 11.5 sacks his Junior year and 18 in his Senior. This success alongside his physical size and ability attracted the eyes of numerous colleges before eventually staying in state and going to Purdue.
College career
As a freshman Sam was mostly a rotational player. He saw the field enough to make a small impact finishing the year with 3 sacks and 8 TFL. Going into his sophomore year he became the starter since the player that was in front of him graduated. His sophomore year he improved dramatically get much better at using his hands in combination with his natural athletic ability. He finished his sophomore season with 8.5 sacks and 14 TFL. His junior year saw similar results as he continued to refine his craft. His most exciting game came during this time during the Old Oaken Bucket game where he racked up 4 sacks to help bring the bucket home to Purdue. He finished his junior year with 13 sacks and 16 TFL.
Many people at this time thought he would declare for the draft but he decided to stay at Purdue 1 more year to finish his degree in Exercise Science. His senior year he wound up with 14 sacks and 18 TFL and was poised and ready to enter the league

Professional career
Roes was a fairly average player going into the DSFL draft. He wasn't as outspoken as other members of his class but he did all the same work they did. In his eyes he was equal to if not better than most of his defensive end counterparts. However, with a fairly poor showing in the prospect bowl tournament it did hurt his draft stock. His short time with the Liverpool Llamas was a good experience to get before being thrust into the depths of the DSFL. Roes ended up being drafted 56th overall to the Norfolk Seawolves in the 2039 DSFL draft. Being drafted so late seemed to put a chip on his shoulder as he went on to quote in a post draft interview, "I should've been picked in the first 3 rounds. I'm just not as talkative as some of my fellow draftees. But that's ok, this is just the minor leagues."
In this first season he was fairly quiet with 34 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks. He started the season off pretty hot in week 1 where he recorded 5 tackles for loss in a single game. This strong week 1 helped his team start off on a 5 game win streak. The Seawolves proved to be a streaky team as they then went on to lose their next 4 straight against tougher competition. They then won 3 and lost 2 to finish out the season. This did allow them in the playoffs where they went to the Ultimini before ultimately losing to the Royals.
