Early years
Gabriel Picard was born in Los Angeles, to SHL defenseman Maurice, of the Los Angeles Panthers, and his wife Evelyne. The family relocated shortly afterward to Santa Monica, where Gabriel grew up. When it became clear that Gabriel was athletically inclined, his father encouraged him to play soccer at a young age, believing that it was a "safer" career choice. However, the enduring popularity of football prevailed, and by his early teens, Gabriel was making the most of his quickness and agility in flag football.
In high school, Gabriel spent his freshman year playing junior varsity ball before he broke onto the Vikings' varsity football team as a return specialist in his sophomore year. He would later be named as starting running back for the varsity team in his junior year. In his four years at Samo, Gabriel amassed almost 3000 rushing yards for the varsity team, attracting the attention of college recruiters. Both rivals.com and ESPN listed him as a four-star, all-purpose back, while 247sports.com listed him as a three-star recruit, noting his quickness and good hands – scouts noted he had lined up as a wide receiver semi-frequently for the Vikings – as a positive, but raising questions over his strength and durability. Nevertheless, he was rated as the 6th best running back recruit in California, and 27th nationally.

College career
Having been recruited quite heavily, Gabriel ultimately decided to commit to Oregon, having been convinced that the program could bring out the best in him. Early in his college career, Gabriel was advised by coaches to bulk up if he wanted to get snaps at runningback. He had grown another inch over the summer, and was dividing his time in training between slot receiver and runningback, so he began an intensive training regime to gain lean mass. He would make a few appearances as a return specialist during his freshman year, but otherwise did not make the field at all. Redoubling his efforts, Gabriel had gained some thirty pounds of muscle mass heading into his sophomore year, and forced his way onto the depth chart at runningback. Primarily used as a returner still, but making some appearances in the backfield, Gabriel gradually grew into the role, before establishing himself as the lead runningback mid-way through his sophomore year.
