Early years
One of 6 siblings, Chester Sweets was bord on an army base in Fort Carson, CO. He moved, however, once his dad was dischacrged. The Sweets lived in Jacksonville, FL. Mom (Janice) and Dad (James) worked, but made time for the Sweets' kids, especially sports. He grew playing all kinds of sports with his brothers and sisters, with Janice and/or James coaching the teams, usually with multiple Sweets kids on the roster. Chester mostly played basketball, baseball, and football (and excelled at all three) but the gridiron was his home. At his position of cornerback, Sweets was home, even though he was alone. "I always saw myself as someone who could do what I had to do, by myself, not rely on no one." At White High School, he led his team in receptions, yardage, touchdowns, tackles, and interceptions in his his last three years, but made his name on the defensive side. His coach frequently put him on an island, requiring Sweets to cover the opponents' best offensive player, which could be a wide receiver or running back, or even a tight end of the quarterback. "I went wherever coach told me to go" Sweets said about his experience at White High.
College career
Offered a scholarship, Sweets jumped at the opportunity to join the program at San Diego State University. "It was like home. But it was different, too." Sweets played sparingly his freshman year, mostly on special teams and in DB-heavy looks. His long length and intelligence meant he wasn't necessarily the most athletic player, but regularly put himself in positions to make plays. He had multiple interceptions in three of his four years and led his team his senior year. Academically, Sweets was a biology major, despite his family's feelings: "My mom used to have to tell me to stop bring animals in the the house. Cats, dogs, lizards, snakes. We caught a snapping turtle once. Well, maybe a couple more times than once." Sweets has long-term goals of creating a biology-focused science wing at his old high school.
