Early years
Thor Kirkby is the son of renowned West Kendall Platoon defenseman Rex Kirkby and an unknown mother. Despite coming from a prestigious hockey family Thor showed more interest in football much to the chagrin of his father. Inheriting his fathers formidable frame but also a quick turn of pace he quickly found himself deployed on the defensive side of the ball and has spent his entire early career in the back field. After impressing scouts he attended St. Thomas Aquinas high school where he was deployed as both a running back and a middle linebacker and did enough to earn an athletic scholarship to the University of Miami.
College career
After joining up with the football programme in Miami Kirkby was offered only limited action in his freshman year. After entering the programme as fullback Kirkby was switched to weakside linebacker one week before the season started. Even with reduced gametime Kirkby showed what he was going to be capable of making thirty tackles, fifteen solo, with three tackles for loss and one sack in eight games. His development continued in leaps and bounds and in his sophmore season he lead the AC in tackles with 133, 13 for loss and 5 sacks. Despite a drop in the total number of tackles in his junior year Kirkby doubled the number of solo tackles he made from his sophmore year as well as making two interceptions one of which resulted in a touchdown return, the first of his career. At the conclusion of his third season with the Hurricanes Kirkby elected to forgoe his senior year and enter the draft for the DSFL.
