Crane was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 14th, 1997. His father, Davis, was a local politician, and his mother, Stephanie, was a school teacher. Crane began playing organized football at the age of 9. He started his freshman year on the offensive line, but was moved to DT and finally DE by his senior year. Throughout his high school career, Crane set school records for both sacks (45) and interceptions by a lineman (14). He was an all-american in all three of his years on the defensive line.
