Marshall von Hildebrand exhibited talent as a goalie on the soccer field, and racked up accolades as a standout athlete in the local tri-state region as a high schooler. But despite these efforts and many workouts and visits with teams, von Hildebrand was unable to secure an athletic scholarship to a D1 school. Dejected, von Hildebrand decided to stay near home and attend the local college, the Franciscan University of Steubenville where he played D3 soccer and recreational Ultimate Frisbee. In his fourth and final season, von Hildebrand traveled with the team for an exhibition game against Catholic University in Washington, D.C. There, while playfully taking practice kickoffs with the opposing school's football team, von Hildebrand crossed paths with a professional scout for the DSFL. The scout encouraged von Hildebrand to sharpen his skills and attend an open try-out ahead of the upcoming DSFL draft. Von Hildbrand obliged and was eventually claimed off of waivers by the Norfolk Seawolves without playing a single down of college football. | Marshall von Hildebrand exhibited talent as a goalie on the soccer field, and racked up accolades as a standout athlete in the local tri-state region as a high schooler. Early years
Marshal von Hildebrand was born to a poverty-stricken family in Weirton, West Virginia. His childhood was challenging on many levels, but perhaps greatest of all was the opioid epidemic that ravaged his community. Von Hildebrand felt the pains acutely as the issue divded his family in two -- his mother, an emergency room nurse, and his father an addict. Prior to his addiction, von Hildebrand's father was a celebrated high school football coach in their home town. Despite his wife's round the clock treatment of addicts, von Hildebrand's father fell into OxyContin's clutches as most do: slowly and under a doctor's prescription. Nevetheless, von Hildebrand's exposure to sport through his father led him to pursure athletics as an escape. But weary of the many injuries he saw affecting the football team - and the subsequent opioid overprescription - von Hildebrand pursued soccer instead. It was until the twighlight of his college experience that he would have the courage to jump into the sport after all.
