Early years
Born in Houston, Texas, Carrasco received no formal education aside from an apprenticeship in the family taxidermy business. Mother Esmerelda, a church choir leader and father Enrique, a one man Zydeco band performer also made music a central part of Juan’s upbringing. Always big for his age (or any age for that matter) Carrasco was a surprisingly nimble and energetic athlete excelling at a variety of athletic endeavors (catfish noodling, washboard strumming), but never became involved in organized sports.
After a freak noodling accident hideously disfigured several of Juan’s fingers he thought he would never play the washboard or stuff an armadillo again. While he could not work commercially as a taxidermist he could pursue the craft from an academic setting. After completing his GED he enrolled at the renowned graduate school of taxidermy at the University of Louisiana. He will defend his doctoral thesis, ""Upholstery and the Opossum: Mastering the Marsupial Matte"" in the fall.
College career
College athletics were never part of Juan’s plans at Louisiana, but his unique size caught the eyes of the Ragin’ Cajuns coaching staff and he was encouraged to walk on to the team in his first year at the school. A raw and unpolished talent it was not until his third year that he saw consistent playing time. But thanks to the tireless work of the coaching staff (citation needed) the pieces started to fall into place and Juan’s unique combination of massive size, instinctive reactions and adroit hands made him a standout performer.
Earning the nickname ‘Rascal’ for his surprisingly clever movements at the line of scrimmage, Carrasco did not fill up the stat sheet, but his presence was always felt when he was on the field. Not least because of his height and reactions allowing him to generate a number of pass deflections from his interior line position. Carrasco earned most improved honors in the Sun Belt in 2059, and was second team all conference in 2060 among a deep roster of talented defensive tackles.

S47
Drafted in the 6th round of the S47 DSFL draft by the London Royals, Carrasco was instantly thrust into the starting lineup. Alongside a talented defensive line consisting of Maurice Gunner, Rex Havoc, and Roman Alexander the team got off to a hot start with dominating defensive performances helping to win their first three games. Rascal himself, however, faced significant growing pains making the jump from college. These first few weeks saw him rarely enter the box score.
As the season progressed Juan grew into his position a bit more, but the team's performance was more uneven. Still, heading into week 14 the Royals had a chance to advance to the DSFL playoffs. Facing off against the Portland Pythons both teams entered with an 8-5 record. Juan recorded three tackles in the game, but also was penalized for roughing the passer penalty late in the first half. In the end the team fell to the eventual S47 Ultimini winning Pythons.
Controversy swirled around Carrasco entering the S48 ISFL draft as an embarrassing DWI incident hit newsstands immediately before the draft. Together with uneven performance during the year it was unclear how early a team would be willing to take a chance on the unpolished product. In the end he was selected in the second round by the Chicago Butchers.
