Early years
Alexander Hordle Jr. grew up in the Chicago metro area. From an early age, he was raised by his mother, Corinne Johnson, with his father out of the picture. When Alexander was 10, Corinne met Orlando Baker, a football coach at Naperville North High School in a suburb of Chicago. The two later married, and Baker officially adopted Hordle Jr. Despite never knowing his father, Alexander chose to keep his birth name, chosen by his father, throughout these different family environments.
Alexander was introduced to football by his adoptive father when he was in middle school, and he took to the game quickly. Alexander enrolled at Naperville North so that he could be coached by Baker, but due to a late growth spurt he only made the varsity team in his Junior year. In high school, Hordle Jr. played a variety of positions, including wide receiver, linebacker, and safety. After a few seasons, Alexander decided that he was more passionate about playing on the defensive side of the ball and he was primarily scouted by colleges to play as linebacker or safety. Hordle Jr. received offers from several local schools, but decided to commit to California despite the further distance from home after meeting with Cal's defensive-minded head coach Camryn Bynum.
College career
Hordle Jr. played in 10 games as a true freshman, splitting time between strong safety and linebacker. He recorded 21 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. As a sophomore, Hordle Jr. became a regular starter in the ""Big Nickel"" position, functioning as a combination safety and linebacker. Coach Bynum commented that his versatility and defensive instincts were too good to keep him off the field, so the defensive scheme was adapted to create a role for him. Hordle Jr. started 11 games, missing one game due to illness, and recorded a total of 75 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 5 sacks. His biggest game came in the Nvidia Graphics Bowl against Tennessee, where he recorded 7 tackles, a sack, and an interception which came in the 4th quarter to set up a game-winning Cal field goal. As a junior, Hordle Jr. started all 13 games, spending more time as a true off-ball linebacker. He recorded 96 tackles, 4 interceptions, 7 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 defensive touchdown, and was named first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) at linebacker.
In the summer after his junior season, Hordle Jr. suffered a torn pectoral injury during practice. He initially planned to return to Cal mid-season, but after the team struggled to start the season and began with a 1-4 record, Hordle Jr. consulted with his family and Coach Bynum and decided to waive his remaining college eligibility and enter the DSFL as a college waiver prospect.
