Early years
Kim Yeon-Seok was born in Anyang, South Korea and raised in the Pyeongchon-dong district of the city. His parents worked in the electronics industry in Seoul. Their commuter lifestyle meant that he was put into after school programs, where he got his first taste of sports.
An only child, he lived a quiet and typical Korean life up until the age of 10, when he grew to 5 foot 9 inches tall. Suddenly his physical stature gave him considerable advantages in the sports that he enjoyed playing - football, baseball and rugby union - and he was soon representing his school at all the sports it offered. Though supportive of his extracurricular activities, his family were much keener that he excelled academically, so he was pushed very hard to do well in school, achieving top grades. Despite being a gifted athlete and starring for his school in both baseball and rugby union, he put his family's wishes before his own athletic ambitions, and he went on to apply for medical school.
College career
Kim Yeon-Seok went on to study medicine at Dong-A University in his home town of Anyang. Despite a gruelling medical student's schedule, he tried out for, and was accepted onto, the university's rugby union team.
By his third year, Yeon-Seok was the captain of his university's rugby union team. His size, speed and strength meant he excelled at the physical side of the game. This led to him being scouted by the South Korean national team, and invited to tryouts.
Tryouts didn't go so well. Despite his physical gifts - he was a standout in the athletic sense - his ball handling was not considered up to par. While being informed that he would not be selected nationally, one scout remarked that he could probably give up on any aspirations of top level rugby, but his athleticism could rival anyone in the world, even the ISFL.
Yon-Seok took this offhand comment very literally, and submitted footage of himself playing rugby to the ISFL International Player Pathway, who invited him for tryouts. Designated as a cornerback for his speed and lack of hands, Kim put his medical studies on hold in order to declare his eligibility for the S48 DSFL Draft, much to the dismay of his family.

Season 48
After being drafted by the London Royals with the 15th pick of the DSFL draft, Kim Yeon-Seok seemed visibly disappointed. He would later clarify that he was not upset with his draft position or his destination, be was just enamoured with the American culture and had assumed he would be heading to a place with rodeos and endless burger chains. He said he was happy to experience England, with fish and chips, which went down well with management.
Yeon-Seok would immediately be thrust into the starting cornerback role in London tasked with guarding the most dangerous receiver on the opposing team. He excelled immediately, recording his first of four interceptions on the season against the Norfolk Seawolves. Yeon-Seok and the rest of the defense made London the best defense in the DSFL, as London would go on to a 12-2 record. They would lose in the first round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Grey Ducks, with Yeon-Seok leading the team in tackles.
This season raised the profile of the young man, as he was widely considered worth of a first round ISFL draft pick, and interviewed with many teams with high draft picks. He was eventually drafted with the 11th overall pick of the ISFL draft by the Arizona Outlaws, the second cornerback taken after first overall pick Alexander Rockstone. In his post-draft interview, Yeon-Seok expressed his gratitude at falling to a team where "they have rodeos", but added a shot at Rockstone - "with great respect, I am the best cornerback in this draft."
