Early years
Kade "KC" Carlton was born in Little Havana, in the heart of Miami, Florida, to Dana Martinez and Cece Carlton. Living in and out of different slum villages in Little Havana, Kade often found safety and shelter at his grandma's house, where he could be with his extended family and hide away from the violence on the streets. He found solace working at a coffee shop with his father as a busboy, finding an affinity for Café Cubano early on and thriving off of it. An avid fan of football, Kade watched the Miami Hurricanes in awe, and even rooted for the Dolphins teams of yesteryear when they were led by Tua Tagovailoa. He always felt himself drawn to the gutless defense, with the corner duo of Byron Jones, Xavien Howard, as well as amazing safety play from Eric Rowe and the short time of Minkah Fitzpatrick. He began to wear jersey number 8 from a young age, as the Miami area code of 305 added up to 8. He continued this into college, committing to the University of Miami his junior year of high school.
College career
KC redshirted his true freshman year due to health concerns, as he was coming off of knee surgery due to an injury that shut him down during the high school playoffs his senior year. During his redshirt freshman year, KC was brought along slowly, still rehabbing his knee, but getting reps during garbage time and special teams. He returned two punts to the house and also had an interception, as well as two fumble recoveries, to add on to 19 tackles. His redshirt sophomore year saw Carlton take a large step up, with a full offseason and no injury concerns leading to more time to focus on his craft. Due to his size, he wasn't as strong as some of his compatriots on a stacked Miami team, with title hopes and strong competition in the ACC from Clemson and Dabo Swinney once again having a strong recruiting class. KC mostly rotated in as a boundary corner, amassing 36 tackles, an interception, 3 fumble recoveries, and two returned for a touchdown. By now, DSFL and ISFL scouts began to take notice of the touchdowns growing on the kid's stat sheet, with elite speed projecting well into the future, even with the prior injury. Finally, his redshirt junior year made him a household name and a national darling, as he tackled 75 players, picked off the opposing quarterback thrice, and returned two to the house. He also continued a trend of recovering another 2 fumbles, while also gaining the only sack of his college career on a designed cornerback blitz. This led to a College Football Playoff year for the Hurricanes, with Kade rocking the U chain throughout the year.
