Early years
Born in Charlotte, NC, Bacon fell in love with football at a very young age. His family was incredibly supportive, and when they moved to Raleigh before he started High School, they were able to get him into Wake Forest - the #1 NC High School Football Program. During his final year of High School, he recorded 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. He was highly rated as a defensive tackle, showing speed and power, but some colleges noted his somewhat subpar tackling ability - although he did have a high rate of pressures.
His father died of pancreatic cancer just months before his 18th birthday, and he reportedly all but stopped showing up to practice and missed the last four games of his final season.
Legal issues
During his second year in Appalachian State, Trae Bacon was arrested for being involved in a fight outside the River Street Alehouse. He was not found to be intoxicated, and released when all parties involved declined to press charges. There were no reported injuries. He did not start in the next game, although no official disciplinary action was taken by the school.
Reportedly a poorly lit cell phone video was briefly posted online by another student, although he removed it shortly afterwards and no copies have been found. The student never replied to any further requests for information.
The only quote from Trae Bacon regarding the incident was in a very short article on the incident in a local Boone newspaper, stating "Man I went easy on him, nobody went to the hospital. We talked it out and we're good." He declined further comment.
College career
Bacon was originally scouted by a large number of colleges, but after missing the last four games of his high school career some of the interest dropped off. He wound up attending Appalachian State in his home state of North Carolina. He chose to major in Sociology.
He saw two starts as a true freshman and performed adequately, but his college career didn't take off until his second year. During his second year, he recorded 6 sacks and 3 assisted sacks for a total of 7.5 sacks, along with 24 total tackles. He was benched one game unexpectedly, possibly tied to his arrest and release as noted above.
In his third year and final year before declaring for the draft, his numbers improved and he recorded 10 sacks and 3 assisted sacks for a total of 11.5 sacks, along with 54 total tackles. His statistics, strength, speed, and college career average of 0.85 tackles per game put him solidly in the top 10 DLs for the upcoming draft class.
