Early years
Terim is the son of Talat and Nuriye Terim and has a brother named Taner. He first started playing soccer at the age of five. At around the age of 12, he started to play only as a central defender. Terim joined the soccer team at his high school and became the team captain on his junior year. His exceptional defending lead the team to the national championship twice in a row. He was planning to continue his career at Galatasaray University as a central defender however the defensive coordinator of the football team convinced him to switch careers. This led to a heated argument with his father, who thought pursuing a career in soccer was the better option. Disobeying his father's wish, Terim moved to Istanbul to play as a safety for Galatasaray University.
College career
In his freshman year, Terim struggled to adapt to football. He was fast and intelligent however his lack of strength and knowledge led to a rocky start to his career. During the off-season of his freshman year, he dedicated himself to studying opponent films as well as gaining muscle. In his sophomore year his hard work started to pay off. He soon became the starting safety of the team and had 4 interceptions throughout the season. His performance helped the team with reaching the playoffs however they were eliminated in the first round.
His breakthrough year was his junior year where he had 6 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles in the regular season. His exceptional play lead the team to the national finals where they lost 10-3. He was named the defensive captain at the start of his senior year, however he had a major injury which resulted in him only playing 6 games.
