Lukas was born in Barrington, Illinois, to Leanna and Jason Van Ness. He committed to Iowa after a great highschool run where he got 37 sacks his senior year along with 17 TFL's and 3 FF. He caught the eye of several college teams but chose to join the elite Iowa defense. He was a top 25 recruit going into college which got his sponsor deals. He signed a deal with Nike for 500k and an unlimited amount of Nike apparel. This was a win win because Nikes sales increased by 7% for the next few months. Some scouts were calling him a bust and saying that his highschool career was his peak. Lukas now felt challenged and set out to prove them wrong.
